Two quick reference guides — one for Islamic/Arabic terms you might not know, and one for the Gen Z slang so everyone can follow along.

Arabic & Islamic Terms

Key terms from the Quran and Islamic tradition

Allah
God. The one and only Creator and Sustainer of everything. The Arabic word for God used by Muslims (and Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews).
Alhamdulillah
"All praise is due to God." Said to express gratitude or relief.
Ayah (pl. Ayat)
A verse of the Quran. Literally means "sign" or "miracle."
Bismillah
"In the name of God." Said before starting any action — eating, reading, traveling, etc.
Deen
Way of life, religion, faith. Islam as a complete system of living.
Dua
Personal prayer or supplication — talking to God directly, asking for help, guidance, or anything. Think of it like manifesting, but you're actually talking to the One who can make it happen.
Dunya
The worldly life. Often contrasted with the Akhirah (afterlife).
Firaun (Pharaoh)
The Egyptian ruler who opposed Musa (Moses). Symbol of arrogance and tyranny in the Quran.
Hadith
Recorded sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad ï·ș. A major source of Islamic guidance alongside the Quran.
Hijrah
The migration of Prophet Muhammad ï·ș and Muslims from Mecca to Medina. A turning point in Islamic history.
Iblis (Shaytan)
Satan / the Devil. A jinn who refused to bow to Adam and was expelled. Now dedicated to misleading humans.
Iman
Faith, belief. Inner conviction in God, His messengers, His books, angels, the afterlife, and divine decree.
Insha'Allah
"If God wills." Said when speaking about future plans or hopes.
Jannah
Paradise / Heaven. The ultimate reward in the afterlife for the righteous.
Jahannam
Hellfire. The punishment in the afterlife for those who reject truth and persist in evil.
Jinn
Beings created from smokeless fire. They have free will like humans — some are good, some are bad. Iblis is one of them.
Kafir (pl. Kuffar)
One who rejects or covers up the truth. Often translated as "disbeliever" but it specifically means someone who knowingly denies the truth.
Khalifah
Vicegerent, steward, representative. Humans are described as God's khalifah on earth.
Khutbah
Sermon, especially the Friday prayer sermon.
Makkah (Mecca)
The holiest city in Islam. Location of the Ka'bah and birthplace of Prophet Muhammad ï·ș.
Madinah (Medina)
The second holiest city in Islam. Where the Prophet ï·ș migrated to and established the first Muslim community.
Meccan / Medinan
Refers to whether a surah was revealed in Mecca (earlier, usually about faith and the unseen) or Medina (later, often about community laws and governance).
Mushrik
One who commits shirk — associating partners with God.
Qiblah
The direction Muslims face during prayer — toward the Ka'bah in Mecca.
Quraysh
The powerful tribe in Mecca that the Prophet ï·ș belonged to. Many of them initially opposed Islam.
Rizq
Provision, sustenance. Everything God provides — money, food, health, opportunities, relationships.
Sabr
Patience, perseverance, steadfastness. One of the most emphasized virtues in the Quran.
Salah
The five daily ritual prayers. One of the five pillars of Islam.
Shirk
Associating partners with God. The one sin the Quran says God does not forgive if you die on it.
Shura
Consultation. The Quran encourages making decisions through mutual consultation.
Seerah
The biography and life story of Prophet Muhammad ï·ș.
Surah
A chapter of the Quran. There are 114 surahs in total.
Taqwa
God-consciousness, being mindful of God. Often translated as "piety" but it's more like spiritual awareness.
Tawheed
The oneness of God. THE core concept of Islam — there is only one God, no partners, no equals.
Tawbah
Repentance. Turning back to God after making mistakes. God is described as loving those who repent.
Ummah
The global community of Muslims.
Wahi
Divine revelation. The process by which God communicated the Quran to Prophet Muhammad ï·ș through angel Jibril.
Zakat
Obligatory charity — 2.5% of savings given annually to those in need. One of the five pillars of Islam.

Slang & Modern Lingo

For the uncles, aunties, and anyone who didn't grow up on the internet

No cap
No lie, for real, I'm being completely serious. "No cap, this surah hits different."
Based
Admirable, courageous, grounded in truth regardless of what others think. "Nuh preaching for 950 years is incredibly based."
Bro / Bros
Casual way to refer to someone. Used gender-neutrally in this context.
Bruh
Expression of disbelief, frustration, or reaction. "Bruh, they really built a golden calf while Musa was on the mountain."
Cap
A lie or exaggeration. "That's cap" = "That's not true."
Caught in 4K
Caught red-handed with undeniable evidence. "The brothers got caught in 4K when the cup was found in Binyamin's bag."
Clapped back
Responded sharply to criticism or challenge. "Ibrahim clapped back at his dad's idol worship."
Cooked
Done for, finished, destroyed. "Firaun was absolutely cooked after the sea closed."
Deadass
Completely serious, not joking at all. "Deadass, this surah changed my whole perspective."
Fam
Family, close friends, people you trust. Short for family.
Fr fr
For real for real — emphasizing sincerity. "This surah is powerful fr fr."
Glow-up
A major positive transformation. "Yusuf's glow-up from prison to palace is unmatched."
GOAT
Greatest Of All Time. "Al-Fatihah is the GOAT dua."
Green flag
A positive sign. "Repenting immediately after messing up? Green flag."
Highkey
Obviously, openly, very much. "The Quraysh were highkey pressed about Islam."
Hits different
Affects you emotionally in a powerful or unexpected way. "This ayah hits different at 3am."
L / W
Loss / Win. "Firaun took the biggest L in history. Musa got the W."
Lowkey
Subtly, quietly, somewhat. "Ibrahim was lowkey terrified but trusted Allah anyway."
Main character energy
Acting like you're the protagonist of the story — confident, important, destined. "Musa had main character energy from birth."
Mic drop
A moment so powerful or conclusive that nothing else needs to be said.
Nah
No. Often used for emphasis or disbelief. "Nah because WHY did they throw him in a well?"
Plot armor
When a character survives impossible situations (like they're protected by the story's plot). "Yusuf had the ultimate plot armor."
Pressed
Upset, bothered, worked up about something. "Abu Lahab stayed pressed about Islam."
Ratio'd
Being proven wrong or shut down publicly. Originally from social media. "Ibrahim ratio'd his whole civilization."
Receipts
Evidence, proof. "The Quran keeps receipts on everyone."
Red flag
A warning sign that something is wrong. "Worshipping a golden calf while Musa is gone? Major red flag."
Slay
To do something exceptionally well. "Maryam absolutely slayed as a single mother with zero support."
The ick
A sudden feeling of disgust or aversion toward someone. "The brothers were giving Yusuf the ick over being the favorite."
Unhinged
Wild, chaotic, out of control. "The jealousy of Yusuf's brothers was unhinged."
Vibe check
Assessing the energy or moral state of a situation. "Allah sent prophets as the ultimate vibe check."
