The Story of the Cow

Allah^(SWT) tells them: "Sacrifice a cow."

That's it. That's the whole instruction. Clear. Direct. No ambiguity.

But instead of just... finding a cow and doing the thing, they start with questions.

"What kind of cow?" they asked Musa^(AS).

Musa^(AS) says: "It's a cow, nothing complicated."

But they keep going. "What age? What color? What specifications?"

It's like that one friend who asks for your recipe but then requests like 47 modifications and suddenly it's a whole different dish. Except this is with a divine command.

Each answer makes the requirements stricter and stricter. Yellow. Not too old, not too young. Perfect condition. No blemishes. No scratches. By the end, finding this cow is basically impossible.

Musa^(AS)'s getting frustrated: "We're almost at the point where any cow works, so just pick one already."

But they don't. They keep asking. They keep narrowing it down. They keep making it harder.

Here's the thing -- and this is the real lesson -- as they asked for more specifications, the price of the cow they needed went up exponentially.

A regular cow? Affordable.

A perfect, unblemished, specific-colored, specific-aged cow? That's a premium animal. That's expensive. That's way more than what they would have paid if they'd just done the thing immediately.

Most of us can't even handle one kind of food on a road trip, but these people added layer after layer of requirements to a straightforward command, making it cost them way more in the end.

Eventually they found a cow that matched all their hyper-specific requirements. It was the only one like it. They paid a ton for it, but they finally did what Allah^(SWT) asked.

When they sacrificed it, Allah^(SWT) accepted it. The command was fulfilled.

But the delay? The questions? The over-complication? That was on them.
