The First Revelation

'Read' -- He Couldn't Read

Surah 96:1-5

TL;DR

Prophet Muhammad in a cave, Jibreel squeezes him saying 'Read,' and bro says 'I can't read.' This is THE moment Islam starts. No cap.

The Cave Called Hira

Yo, so Muhammad (peace be upon him) is in this cave, right? Hira cave on a mountain near Mecca. He's just there meditating, thinking about life, the universe, everything -- ngl he had main character energy even before the main character arc started. This is around 40 years old, still nobody knows what's about to happen.

Then BOOM. Jibreel shows up. Not gentle. Not a whisper. Jibreel SQUEEZES him so hard -- and I mean SQUEEZES -- he literally can't breathe. This ain't your typical angel visit, bro. This is the heavens saying 'wake up.'

Iqra -- Read

Jibreel drops one word: 'Iqra' -- READ.

But Muhammad is like, 'Nah bro, I don't read. I'm not literate.' (Quran 96:3-4 -- this is literally what he says.) Jibreel squeezes him AGAIN. Then releases. Then does it a THIRD time. Three times. And each time: 'Read.'

Then Jibreel recites the actual revelation (96:1-5):

'Read in the name of your Lord who created -- created mankind from a clinging clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen -- taught mankind what they did not know.'

So the first words of Islam are about READING. About knowledge. About God as the ultimate teacher. Goated way to start a religion.

Running Home Terrified

Muhammad wakes up SHOOK. I mean genuinely terrified. He's trembling, his heart's pounding, he's caught in 4K by heaven itself. He runs home to Khadijah (his wife, absolute goat woman, fr fr).

He's like 'Cover me! Something happened!' -- he's legitimately freaked out. But Khadijah? She says the most iconic thing: 'Allah will never disgrace you. You help the poor. You're honest. You keep your word. Allah would never do that to you.'

[HADITH context: Early Islamic sources say Khadijah took him to Waraqa ibn Nawfal, a Christian scholar, who confirmed this was divine revelation -- but the Quran is what matters here, and it starts right here in 96:1-5.]

And that's how it started, bro. No hype. No angels singing. Just IQRA.

Key Takeaway

The first word of revelation was 'Read.' Allah doesn't want NPCs -- He wants people who seek knowledge, who question, who grow. The Prophet was terrified but he stayed. That's faith, no cap.
